Specialty Cut Flowers: The Production of Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs, and Woody Plants for Fresh and Dried Cut Flowers

This greatly revised and expanded edition of Specialty Cut Flowers offers a unique perspective on cut flower production, bringing together in one place the information growers need to propagate and cultivate their eye-catching plants. Introductory chapters offer a discussion of domestic and foreign production, a brief overview of trends, and general comments and techniques for the postharvest care of flowers, including drying and preserving. The main body of the book gives extensive coverage of annual, perennial, bulbous, and woody species for commercial cut flower production, including propagation and growing-on methods, environmental factors, yield in the field, greenhouse forcing, stage of harvest, postharvest handling, and pests and diseases. For easier reference, plants now appear in single, straightforward A-to-Z order. Reflecting decades of research and writing by two distinguished horticulturists, Specialty Cut Flowers, Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged will be an indispensable reference for the nursery bookshelf.

197/365 Flowers and Balloons

197/365 Flowers and Balloons

Tonight, Larry White joined me at the New England Camera Club Council Annual Conference in lovely Western MA for a tethered balloon glow. The event started slowly, as they set up the balloons and herds of photographers gathered around. As the balloons started to inflate, more photographers gathered close to the balloons. Larry and I decided to take the road less traveled- we walked far away from the crowd, to some higher ground, and started shooting down on the scene. I noticed a clustered of lilies and wondered what they would look like in the foreground. "Go into the garden", Larry said, so I decided to give it a try. At first, I was using my 24-70, keeping the flowers in the foreground and the balloon in the background, both recognizable. But then, I realized what I really wanted to photograph. I switched to my 70-200 and used the compression to create a fun background for the lily.

It was a really fun night. While most people stayed close to the balloons or in one spot, Larry and I walked all around and took pictures from every angle. I'll try to post a few more photos over the next couple days because it was a really fun event.

Wild Flower

Wild Flower

A flower growing in my garden, i don't know what is is only that is is pretty!....
Thanks to Amanita2007 for informing me of the name of this flower! It is a Corncockle..

A medium to tall annual with long, narrow and softly hairy leaves. The large pinky purple flowers are borne singly on a long stem and are surrounded by long pointed sepals. The flowers are followed by a straw coloured flask like seed head containing large black, rough textured seed.
Corncockle was introduced into Britain as a contaminant of grain at least as early as the Iron Age. It is a plant that can tolerate a range of soil types and can be a weed in cereal and other arable crops. In Britain its stronghold appeared to be within rye crops on the light, sandy soils of the south and east of the country. Although never common it suffered a dramatic decline at the beginning of the twentieth century with the development of improved seed cleaning techniques. It is now virtually extinct in the wild.
